Changes in soil structure occur when different management systems are applied. We hypothesized that in the soil series studied, long-term conventional tillage effect on some physical and chemical soil properties are related to aggregate size, architecture and arrangement. The objectives of this work were: (i) quantify the effect of continuos cropping under conventional tillage on bulk density, particle density, porosity, organic matter, geometric mean diameter of clay fraction, electrical conductivity, iron, and silicon in the A and Bt horizons of three soil series, and (ii) to discuss why aggregate hierarchical level of organization in the A horizons permits to justify the state of the characteristics evaluated as well as helpful to understand the water flux behavior. Management systems were continuos cropping under conventional tillage and non-grazed pastures. Crops included were spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. ), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and corn (Zea mays L.). The results showed that 17 year of continuos cropping under conventional tillage modified the physical and chemical soil properties evaluated. Especially in the A horizons bulk density, geometric mean diameter of clay fraction, iron and particle density were increased. On the other hand, silicon, organic matter, porosity and electrical conductivity decreased. The mechanisms responsible of soil organic matter stabilization permitted to relate organic matter, iron and silicon contents in the management systems evaluated. In the A horizons, the conceptual framework that contributed to justify the state of physical and chemical properties analyzed was also helpful to relate them with water flux behavior.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of introduction of a chisel plow (LV) on a notillage (SD) cultivated soil, in some soil physical properties and crops yield in the southeast of the Buenos Aires. Province. The bulk density (δ ) at 3-8 cm depth was 1.31 Mg m-3 in SD and 1.23 Mg a m-3 in LV. At 13-18 cm depth the δ values were similar in both treatments. The relative δ was 91 % a for SD and 84 % for LV. The aggregate stability index were 71 % and 66 % for SD and LV respectively. Besides the maximum mechanical resistance in SD,the corn yield was 6568kgha-1 and 6977kgha-1 under SD and LV respectively. The wheat yield was 4196 kg ha-1 in SD and 4003 kg ha-1 in LV. The introduction of chisel plow in soil under no-tillage do not affect soil physical properties.
